Foot grounders are used where wrist straps are not practical, such as tasks which require mobility.  They must be used with an ESD protected floor (such as properly grounded ESD floor finish, carpet tiles, or floor mats) to provide a continuous electrical path from the user directly to the ESD ground.  Foot grounders function the exact same way as wrist straps by providing a ground path from the moisture layer on the wearer’s skin through socks and via the conductive tab to the dissipative or conductive floor surface.

Accepted industry standards dictate the foot grounders to be worn on both feet to ensure that one foot is always in contact with the floor at all times.  It is important that personnel are instructed in the proper use and maintenance of foot grounders, especially the necessity of placing the grounding tab between the foot and the shoe.  Download Technical Bulletin P-2020 from www.desco.com for details.
