Avago Technologies is the industry – leading supplier motion control encoders. They offer the industry’s smallest form factors, widest range of resolutions, and highest level of integration to reduce the number of components needed to shorten time to market.

Motion Control, in broad definition, means converting mechanical movement from codewheel/codestrip into equivalent electrical signals to move an object in an accurate and precise manner.

The AEDR-8400 encoder series are miniature incremental encoders incorporating leadless surface mount capability.  Its miniature dimensions of 3.00mm x3.28mm x 1.26mm make it the smallest optical encoder with digital outputs in the market. With both the LED light source and the photo detector IC in a single package, the encoder employs reflective technology to sense rotary or linear motions.

The AEDR-8400-132 encoder offers 254 lines per inch (LPI) resolution which is equivalents to 10 lines per mm (LPmm) with two channel digital outputs. The encoder is designed to operate over -20°C to 85°C temperature range. Note that the AEDR-8400 encoder is suitable for low operating voltage application as the encoder only needs a single 2.8V (typically) voltage supply.

The encoder easily fits various design requirements due to its miniature size and suits a wide range of applications: Digital camera, Injet Printers, wafer handling machines, sewing machines.

Hint and Tips

Design Tip:

A resistor to limit current to the LED is required. The recommended value is 121Ω (±1%) for 254 LPI and 255Ω (±1%) for 318 LPI. The resistor should be placed in series between the 2.8 V supply and pin 1 of the device (VLED). This will result in an LED current of approximately 6mA.
