Future Electronics has announced that its Creative Board now offers developers the freedom to implement designs running the FreeRTOS kernel on the RISC-V CPU soft core embedded in the board’s FPGA.
FUTUREM2GL-EVB is a system development board based on the IGLOO2 or SmartFusion2 FPGAs from Microchip (formerly Microsemi). The Creative Board provides a hardware reference design for new FPGA-based designs, including the power supply, analog functions and connectivity.
The Creative Board’s FPGAs are low- and mid-density FPGAs suitable for a wide range of embedded and industrial applications. These FPGAs do not compete with the bigger, more expensive high-density FPGAs supplied by Xilinx and Altera, which are widely used in telecoms and network equipment.

The Creative Board benefits from the decision of Amazon to port the FreeRTOS real-time operating system to the open-source RISC-V processor core, which is embedded as soft IP in the IGLOO2 and SmartFusion2 FPGAs on the Creative Board. This means that Creative Board users can now use FreeRTOS as the RTOS for their embedded designs developed on the board.
