FPGA Kit Provides Integrated Platform for Development of Reliable, Secure Electric Motors

Microchip provides a reference platform for developing high-performance, reliable and secure dual-axis motor-control systems based on its SmartFusion®2 SoC FPGA. Motors developed using this starter kit can be made deterministic, precise, power-efficient, reliable and secure.

The reference design board, which has the orderable part number SF2-MC-STARTER-KIT, is suitable for the development of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) or a Brushless DC (BLDC) motor.

It is supplied with algorithms for control functions such as sensorless Field-oriented Control (FOC), FOC with Hall magnetic position sensing, FOC with an encoder position sensor, and FOC with a resolver. A Microchip algorithm also supports control of a stepper motor with up to 1,024 micro-steps.

The reference platform is backed by a sophisticated graphical user interface which allows for the dynamic tuning of parameters such as reference speed and the Kp/Ki gains of Proportional/Integral (PI) controllers, and the viewing of internal signals for debugging purposes.

The board provides various communication interfaces, including Ethernet, CAN, USB and others.

SmartFusion2 SoC FPGAs feature stronger design security than other FPGAs: they resist Differential Power Analysis (DPA) tampering using technology licensed from Cryptography Research Incorporated. The security architecture was designed with a layered approach in mind, building on top of a foundation of secure hardware.

To support the development of a complete motor-control system, Microchip provides a portfolio of complementary products including FPGAs, silicon carbide diodes and MOSFETs, power modules, timing devices, Power-over-Ethernet controllers/midspans, and sensors.
