Integrated thermocouple front-end cuts design time and system cost

The MCP9601 from Microchip is a fully integrated thermocouple IC which converts a thermocouple voltage output to a value in degrees Celsius. It provides a complete plug-and-play thermocouple sensor-conditioning solution, reducing development time and lowering system cost for applications requiring accurate temperature measurement.

 

The MCP9601 supports eight types of thermocouple: K, J, T, N, S, E, B, and R. The device provides user-programmable registers, giving the designer flexibility to adapt its operation to fit various temperature-sensing applications. The registers control user-selectable settings, such as:

  • Low-power modes for battery-powered applications
  • Adjustable digital filter for short-lived transient temperatures
  • Four individually programmable temperature alert outputs, which can be used to detect multiple temperature zones

The IC also includes features such as thermocouple open-circuit and short-circuit detection, and cold-junction compensation.

    • ±1.5°C maximum error in hot-junction measurement
    • ±1.0°C maximum error in cold-junction measurement
  • Supports up to eight devices on I2C bus
  • Operating-voltage range: 2.7 V to 5.5 V
  • 500 μA operating current
  • 2 μA shutdown current
