FTM / Intelligent Sensing / Monolithic Power Systems — MP2797 Battery Monitoring IC
The MP2797 from Monolithic Power Systems is a robust battery management device which combines cell voltage measurement capabilities with protection functions in a single chip. It provides a complete analog front end (AFE) for battery monitoring and protection.
The MP2797 is suitable for use in battery management systems (BMS) which monitor between seven and 16 cells connected in series. The absolute voltage can exceed 80 V on certain pins.
The MP2797 includes two separate ADCs: the first ADC measures each channel’s differential cell voltages across up to 16 channels and the die temperature, as well as acquiring four-channel temperature measurements via an external NTC thermistor. The second ADC performs coulomb counting, measuring the charge/discharge current via an external current-sense resistor.
An integrated high-side driver can drive more than four paralleled N-channel MOSFETs. Robust protection functions with configurable or programmable thresholds include:
The MP2797 includes integrated balancing FETs for equalizing mismatched voltages between cells; it can also drive external balancing FETs. The baseline current is optimized to match the operating mode. For applications requiring compliance with IPC 2221B or UL 60950-1, conformal coating may be required.
The MP2797 is supplied in a 7 mm x 7 mm TQFP-48 package.
