iWave Systems has launched the iW-RainboW-G40M, a solderable i.MX 8M Plus OSM LGA system-on-module (SOM) based on the new Open Standard Module (OSM) specification defined by the SGeT consortium. The module is the industry’s first in the 45 mm x 45 mm Size L standard of the OSM specification, with provision for 662 contacts.
The SOM features an NXP Semiconductors i.MX 8M Plus applications processor in the Dual, Quad, or Quad Lite variant. Based on the 64-bit Arm® v8 architecture, the processor offers high-performance computing capabilities: the module excels in machine learning, machine vision, edge intelligence, and multimedia applications. The module also includes dual-mode 802.11b/g/n/ac/ax Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® 5.0 connectivity.
The OSM specification defines a standard for a module to be soldered on the carrier board as an LGA package, instead of relying on edge or board-to-board connectors. The surface-mount technology offers greater mechanical robustness. This makes the OSM ideal for applications in which the product is prone to high vibration, such as in-flight tablets, or in connectivity clusters for motorcycles and scooters.
The compact form factor also provides the smallest pin-to-area ratio, and allows for technology scalability.
The iW-RainboW-G40M module is application-ready and is supported by development kits, and supplied with all necessary software drivers and board support packages. Software supported includes the Ubuntu, Android™, and Linux® operating systems.
