The NCL30170 from ON Semiconductor is a linear, constant-current LED controller for use in smart lighting and phase-cut dimming systems.
The NCL30170 is a power controller which implements the ‘direct AC’ method of driving LEDs when paired with suitable MOSFETs. A direct AC driver circuit is slightly less efficient than conventional switching AC-DC converter technologies such as the flyback converter, but is much smaller and cheaper.
The NCL30170 is for use in power circuits for LED lamps that are subject to severe cost and/or space constraints. This applies, for instance, to LED-based versions of standard lamps such as the GU10 type.
