MLX90248 - Micropower & Omnipolar™ Hall Switch
The MLX90248 Omnipolar™ Hall effect sensor is a mixed signal CMOS integrated circuit that incorporates advanced chopper-stabilization techniques to provide accurate and stable magnetic switch points.
The MLX90248 has internally controlled clocking mechanism to cycle power to the Hall element and analog signal processing circuits. This is used to drive the high current-consuming portions of the circuit into a “Sleep” mode. Periodically the device is “Awakened” by internal logic and the magnetic flux from the Hall element is evaluated against the predefined thresholds. The Sleep/Awake strategy is managed internally and leads to major reduction of power consumption.
If the flux density is above or below the Bop/Brp thresholds then the MLX90248 output is driven to change states accordingly. While in the “Sleep” cycle the output is latched in its previous state. This feature is known as “Micropower” and makes the MLX90248 especially suitable for battery-powered applications as it combines low voltage operation and low current consumption.
The MLX90248 exhibits “Omnipolar” magnetic characteristics. Therefore, the sensor reacts to both North and South magnetic pole. The output will be latched ON (Bop) in the presence of a sufficiently strong South or North magnetic field facing the marked side of the package. The output will be latched OFF (Brp) in the absence of a magnetic field.
The MLX90248 is offered in both Thin SOT and ultra thin QFN surface mount device package types. The UTQFN package only requires 3mm2 PCB surface and is 0.43mm maximum thick, which is particularly important in designs where space-saving and miniaturization are important.
