What is a TVS Diode?
A TVS diode, or transient voltage suppression diode, is an electrical device which is designed to divert or shunt voltage spikes from a circuit in order to protect that circuit. TVS diodes are also used to protect circuits from electrostatic discharge. Silicon-avalanche diodes (SAD) and Zener diodes are the common types of circuit protection diodes used in TVS applications. SADs see a temperature increase as voltage resistance increases, whereas Zener diodes see a temperature increase as voltage resistance decreases.
