What is an Inductor?

Inductors are passive electrical components with two terminals that store energy in their magnetic field. All conductors have a certain amount of inductance because there is a current to be opposed. Inductors are designed in order to create this inductance, which is a magnetic field produced by changing the current running through a medium. By wrapping a wire around itself into a coil, the current required in order to produce a magnetic field of a certain power is reduced accordingly. Inductors are generally wrapped around a core material to increase inductance. Iron is the most common core material used for inductors.
