What is an Attenuator?

An attenuator is an electronic device which reduces the amplitude or power of a signal without causing a big distortion to its waveform. An attenuator is the opposite of an amplifier. While an amplifier provides gain, an attenuator provides a gain less than 1, or a loss. Attenuators are passive devices which are made using simple voltage divider networks. It is a circuit which suppresses or opposes a specific frequency band and is used for filtering and reducing noise in a circuit. Radio frequency or RF attenuators are coaxial in structure. Attenuation is expressed in decibels of relative power.
