What is Motion Control?

Motion control is a subdivision of automation where the velocity or the position of a machine is controlled by using a device such as a linear actuator, hydraulic pump or a servo electric motor. A motion control system contains a motion controller to generate set points and close a position or velocity feedback loop. It also contains a drive or amplifier as well as an actuator like a hydraulic pump, linear actuator, air cylinder or electric motor for output motion. Common control functions include velocity control, position control and pressure or force control.
