What is a Temperature Sensor?

A temperature sensor is an electronic device that gathers data concerning the temperature from a source and then converts it into a form that can be displayed and understood by a user or another device. A temperature sensor is often a resistance temperature detector or thermocouple that measures temperature through an electrical signal. A resistance temperature detector is a variable resistor that changes its electrical resistance in proportion to the changes in temperature in a repeatable, precise and nearly linear manner. A thermocouple is made from two dissimilar metals that generate electrical voltage in proportion to the changes in temperature.

Types of Temperature Sensors

There are several different kinds of temperature sensors.
