What is a 16 bit Microcontroller?

A 16 bit microcontroller is a self-contained system with memory, peripherals and a processor that can be used as an embedded system. Most programmable 16 bit microcontrollers used today are embedded in other consumer products or machinery including telephones, automobiles, household appliances and peripherals for computer systems. Therefore, another name for a 16 bit microcontroller is "embedded 16 bit controller." Some embedded systems are more sophisticated whereas others have minimal requirements for memory and programming length with a low complexity for the software. Input and output devices include LCD displays, relays, solenoids, switches and sensors for data such as temperature, humidity or light level, amongst others.
