Panasonic Industry HE-R Power Relay

Board-mount power relay operates as main switch in three-phase EV charging systems

The new Panasonic Industry 40 A HE-R relay is the world’s first PCB relay that can be used as the main switching element in a three-phase system. The IEC62955-compliant relay is intended for use in ac and dc electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, including domestic EV wall boxes.

Suitable for mounting directly on a charging station’s main board, the HE-R relay measures just 35 mm x 58 mm x 47 mm. The relay enables designers to switch large loads directly from the PCB. This direct switching arrangement cuts the component count and reduces the size of three-phase charger systems.

The HE-R relay offers a unique contact arrangement, either 4a or 4a1b. With the 4a contact arrangement, each of the four normally open contacts can switch 40 A, thanks to a sophisticated thermal design which dissipates heat safely.

The 4a1b arrangement offers the additional option of a normally closed contact: this can be used as a feedback contact for loads as small as 10 mA or 5 V.
