Bluetooth SoC offers ultra low-power wireless connectivity

STMicroelectronics’ BlueNRG-LP is a programmable Bluetooth® Low Energy (LE) system-on-chip (SoC) which operates at the very low power levels required to provide long run-times in wearable devices and other battery-operated products.


This wireless Bluetooth device can operate on a peak current of 3.4 mA when receiving, a peak Transmit current of 4.3 mA, just 0.6 µA in deep stop mode, and 10 nA in shut-down mode. It can be programmed to produce output power up to +8 dBm.


The BlueNRG-LP is ideal for devices which can take advantage of the increased data rate and range provided by the latest v5.2 of the Bluetooth LE specification. The BlueNRG-LP supports v5.2 features such as a 2 Mbits/s data rate, long-range mode, advertising extensions, channel selection algorithm #2, and GATT caching.


The BlueNRG-LP enables point-to-point connectivity between devices as well as Bluetooth mesh networking for large device networks. The BlueNRG-LP can also be used for 2.4 GHz proprietary radio communication, making it suitable for ultra low-latency applications.


While the BlueNRG-LP is ideal for low-power short-range connectivity, low-power wide-area networking (LPWAN) communications are supported by a different ST wireless device, the S2-LP.


The S2-LP, a low-power RF transceiver operating at frequencies below 1 GHz, enables designers to implement wireless equipment designs intended for use in Sigfox networks. The S2-LP also supports the Wireless M-Bus protocol and includes an embedded packet handler to implement proprietary wireless protocols.


The S2-LP is suitable for use in the licence-free ISM and Short-Range devices (SRD) frequency bands at 433 MHz, 868 MHz and 920 MHz, but can also be programmed to operate at other frequencies in the 430 to 470 MHz or 860 to 940 MHz bands.


This frequency coverage is suitable for use in Sigfox networks: Sigfox uses ultra-narrowband technology operating in 200 kHz of bandwidth in licence-free spectrum: 868 to 869 MHz or 902 to 928 MHz depending on the region. The S2-LP is capable of supporting narrow channel spacing down to 12.5 kHz.


The S2-LP transceiver also provides built-in support for frequency-shift keying (FSK) modulation, which is one of the two modulation schemes that may be applied to Sigfox transmissions, the other is phase-shift keying.

Development Kits

Kit Part Number: STEVAL-IDB011V1

The STEVAL-IDB011V1 development kit consists of a Bluetooth® LE evaluation board based on the BlueNRG-LP Bluetooth LE SoC. It includes a range of MEMS sensors, a digital MEMS microphone, and various interface buttons and LEDs to develop and test designs for Bluetooth LE applications.

Board Part Number: STEVAL-FKI868V2

The STEVAL-FKI868V2 evaluation board is based on the S2-LP sub-1 GHz ultra low-power transceiver for ISM bands and wireless M-Bus. The NUCLEO-L053R8 motherboard is equipped with an STM32L0 low-power MCU to control the S2-LP.
