Reference design accelerates time-to-market for high-voltage energy storage systems

The RD-BESS1500BUN 1,500 V Energy Storage System (ESS) reference design from NXP Semiconductors features a complete set of hardware and software components for a battery management system (BMS).

The RD-BESS1500BUN from NXP Semiconductors, a production-grade reference design, features a complete set of hardware and software components for the BMS in a 1,500 V ESS, including battery management units, cell management units, and battery junction boxes.

 

The reference design takes account of all relevant safety requirements while providing for high efficiency and long battery life. The RD-BESS1500BUN’s architecture supports compliance with the IEC 61508 and IEC 60730 standards governing BMS operating at up to 1,500 V. The complete hardware, software and safety package includes safety software libraries and documentation, providing for pre-certification for IEC 61508 at SIL-2 and IEC 60730 Class B.

 

The RD-BESS1500BUN is scalable across a range of applications. Its high-voltage BMS chipset, based on an S32K358 microcontroller, helps OEMs to reduce development cost and reduce time-to-market. The reference design is suitable for stackable high-voltage battery ESS used in large-scale utility solutions, in industrial and commercial uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), as well as in storage systems for domestic use.

 

Six-channel MC33772C and 18-channel MC33774 lithium-ion battery cell controllers perform precise and synchronized measurements to exploit the full potential of the system’s 54- and 18-cell battery modules, maximizing their efficiency, functionality, health, and return on investment.

 

The RD-BESS1500BUN is backed by a software development suite, which is downloadable on activation of the registration ID included in the kit.
