STMicroelectronics — LED1202 LED Driver IC

STMicroelectronics LED1202 LED Driver IC

12-channel 20 mA LED driver stores up to eight lighting sequence patterns

The LED1202 from STMicroelectronics is a 12-channel LED driver which may be used to control red/green/blue LED lighting and to provide ‘breathing’ and other lighting pattern effects in portable and battery-powered consumer electronics devices. Eight programmable patterns can be stored internally for automatic sequencing without the intervention of a host microcontroller.

The output current can be adjusted separately for each channel up to 20 mA, with a guaranteed 5 V output driving capability, by either 8-bit analog or 12-bit digital dimming. The device’s slow turn-on and turn-off times minimize noise generation. A phase-shifting function helps to reduce inrush current.

Pattern sequences can be configured for duration time and number of repetitions. For multi-device applications, a common clock domain can be shared for timing synchronization.

The LED1202 is available in two package options:

●       20-lead wafer-level chip-scale package measuring 1.7 mm x 2.2 mm x 0.5 mm

●       20-lead QFN package measuring 3 mm x 3 mm x 0.6 mm

Features

  • Supply-voltage range: 2.6 V to 5 V
  • 4 µA quiescent current
  • 8 V-compatible I2C control interface
  • Eight configurable I2C slave addresses plus global address
  • Open LED detection
  • Over-temperature protection
  • Fault flag pin

Applications

  • Wearable devices
  • Battery-powered devices
  • Portable accessories

Evaluation Board/Development Kit

Part Number: STEVAL-LLL007V1

The STEVAL-LLL007V1 kit consists of the STEVAL-LLL007M1 main board and the STEVAL-LLL007D1 and STEVAL-LLL007D2 panel boards. The LED1202 IC can drive at start-up the 36 white LEDs available on the main board.

Designers can connect the main board to a NUCLEO-L073RZ development platform running the STSW-LLL007FW firmware, which comes with pre-configured random and wave patterns for use in stand-alone mode.

Part Number: STEVAL-LLL0011V1

The STEVAL-LLL011V1 is a compact board containing 16 RGB LEDs driven by four LED1202 drivers and controlled by an STM32L073 microcontroller, which runs user scripts for LED effects. These effects are designed for portable applications powered by a lithium-ion battery. The LED effects can be triggered by buttons, a gyroscope, and a microphone.

Part Number: X-NUCLEO-LED12A1

The X-NUCLEO-LED12A1 LED driver expansion board for STM32 Nucleo features four LED1202 devices which can drive up to 48 LEDs. The X-NUCLEO-LED12A1 expansion board comes with an additional LED panel board which houses two LED matrices: a 6×8 white LED matrix, and a 4×4 RGB matrix.
