1.5 Mpixel monochrome image sensor provides sophisticated on-chip tools

The STMicroelectronics VD56G3 for machine vision and robotics applications is available for evaluation in a convenient camera module format shared by the ST BrightSense family of image sensors.

The VD56G3 from STMicroelectronics is a 1.5 Mpixel monochrome image sensor IC for professional and consumer vision applications which provides outstanding performance in the visible and near infrared portions of the spectrum. Featuring a proprietary ST pixel design, the image sensor offers a broad toolbox of on-chip functions which include features for optimizing data size and frame rates, such as crop, binning, and programmable sequences.

For easy evaluation and integration of the sensor IC, which is supplied by ST as a bare die, design engineers can work with a full-featured camera module paired with a processor board or an ST interface board. The STEVAL-56G3MAI module features the VD56G3 mounted beneath an M12 lens holder screwed to the board, and a removable lens. The module also has a flex cable to connect to a broad range of embedded processing platforms.

The STEVAL-56G3MAI is one of a family of modules for evaluating various image sensors in the ST BrightSense portfolio. All share the same standard connector and pinout, to enable easy replacement of one image sensor with another in proof-of-concept or prototype designs.

All of the image sensor modules are backed by a comprehensive set of enablement software, drivers and evaluation tools, including drivers for a Linux® operating system. The modules also support GUI software for evaluation when paired with the ST EVK Main hardware.

The image sensor is also available in the VD66GZ color RGB version and the VD16GZ RGB-IR version.
