Ambient light sensor enables accurate lux measurement in car interior

The Vishay VEML4031X00, a 16-bit digital module, provides a complete, ready-made solution for ambient light sensing, including a photodiode and supporting signal chain components in a compact package.

The VEML4031X00 from Vishay is a digital ambient light sensor in a miniature package which enables the accurate control of light output in automotive applications such as display backlighting. Its rectangular package ratio allows the implementation of display designs which have a small bezel.

 

Housed in an opaque surface-mount 4.38 mm x 1.45 mm package which is just 0.6 mm high, the VEML4031X00 includes a highly sensitive photodiode, a low-noise amplifier, and a 16-bit ADC. Ambient light measurements are supplied as 16-bit digital values via an I2C interface.

 

High resolution and a wide dynamic range mean that the sensor can detect light at levels from 0 lux to 172 klux at resolution down to 2.6 mlux. The sensor may be used underneath a dark lens or cover glass.
