FTM / AI & Edge Solutions / Renesas — RZ-G3E Microprocessor (MPU)
Optimized for next-generation human-machine interface (HMI) applications at the edge, the RZ/G3E is a 64-bit general-purpose microprocessor. At its heart is a quad-core Arm® Cortex®-A55 CPU running up to 1.8GHz alongside an Arm Ethos™-U55 neural processing unit (NPU) for on-chip AI inference. This allows the RZ/G3E to locally handle demanding tasks like image recognition, object detection, and voice processing without overloading the main CPU. A built-in Arm Cortex-M33 core handles real-time control and low-power standby management, enabling a balance of high performance and energy efficiency in complex HMI systems.
HMI focused multimedia capabilities are another highlight. The RZ/G3E integrates an Arm Mali™-G52 3D GPU for rich graphics and a hardware video codec supporting both H.264 and H.265 high-efficiency video coding (HEVC) encode/decode. Notably, it is the first device in the RZ/G series to include H.265 video encoding, enabling high-quality video streaming and recording with improved compression. The MPU can drive dual independent displays simultaneously, for example, a primary touchscreen and a secondary info panel, via interfaces like MIPI-DSI, dual-link LVDS, or parallel RGB. A 4-lane MIPI CSI-2 camera input is also available, allowing direct connection of high-resolution cameras for vision applications. Together, the GPU, codec, and display engine make the RZ/G3E well-suited for advanced GUIs, multimedia playback, and computer vision in HMI devices.
In terms of connectivity and integration, the RZ/G3E offers a wealth of high-speed I/O and peripheral interfaces. It features dual Gigabit Ethernet ports and a PCIe 3.0 interface for networking and modular expansion, allowing 5G modems or high-speed storage. A USB 3.2 Gen2 host interface plus dual USB 2.0 ports provide connectivity for cameras, peripherals, and fast data transfer. For embedded and industrial needs, the MPU includes CAN-FD controllers, with 6 channels for real-time fieldbus networking and up to two SDIO interfaces for SD/SDIO devices or eMMC storage. The combination of these interfaces means the RZ/G3E can serve as a connectivity hub in edge applications, linking sensors, user interfaces, and cloud or industrial networks.

RZ/G3E SMARC Evaluation Kit with module and carrier board enables quick prototyping of dual-display AI-HMI systems. The recommended way to jump-start design with the RZ/G3E is the official Evaluation Board Kit. This kit includes a compact SMARC 2.1 module board with the RZ/G3E MPU in a 15mm x 15mm package) and a feature-rich carrier board, allowing developers to readily evaluate all functions of the MPU.
The module comes equipped with 4GB LPDDR4X RAM, 64GB eMMC flash, and 16MB QSPI boot Flash, so it can boot Linux and run demos out-of-the-box. The carrier board breaks out the RZ/G3E extensive I/O: dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, USB 3.2/2.0, PCIe slot, dual display outputs with adapters for HDMI, MIPI-CSI camera connector, audio jacks, CAN-FD, PMOD expansion.
