Robust memory and storage products offer high reliability in Industry 5.0 systems

February 5, 2026

Embedded multimedia card (eMMC) Flash memory and industrial solid-state disks (SSDs) from Kingston enable developers to store the rapidly growing volumes of data generated by new AI-enhanced smart industrial equipment.

Industry 5.0, also known as the fifth industrial revolution, is a new and emerging phase of industrialization in which humans work alongside advanced technology and AI-powered robots to enhance workplace processes. It is enabled by developments in technologies such as automation, big data analytics, the IoT, machine learning, robotics, smart systems, and virtualization.

The implementation of Industry 5.0 generates high volumes of data from applications for monitoring, analyzing and operating smart and increasingly autonomous equipment. This calls for memory and storage products which provide high data capacity, but also the robustness to tolerate operation in harsh industrial environments. An ideal solution is provided by the Kingston® family of eMMC devices and industrial SSDs.

The eMMC portfolio includes an I-Temp eMMC™ Flash memory range for industrial and other applications that require tolerance of operating temperatures from -40°C to 85°C. The Kingston® eMMC non-volatile memory products consist of NAND Flash memory and a Flash memory controller. The controller implements error correction, wear leveling, performance optimization and read sensing, freeing the host processor from the need to perform low-level Flash memory management.

Kingston also handles, invisibly, the migration from one generation of NAND Flash technology to another, so that device OEMs only have to implement the interface design and qualification process for any part number once. This results in a shorter time to market, and enables OEMs to benefit from the cost, capacity and performance improvements made by NAND Flash manufacturers over time.

The Industrial SSD product range, available with memory capacity up to 2Tbytes, operates reliably at temperatures between -40°C and 85°C. Built-in SSD controller functionality preserves capacity and helps maintain data integrity.

The Kingston OTCS1S and OTM8S1S families of industrial SATA solid-state drives (SSDs) provide excellent reliability when operating in harsh environments. The SSDs undergo a full burn-in test process before leaving the factory. They include advanced controllers which automatically perform wear-levelling, garbage collection and other important NAND Flash management functions.

The OTCS1S SSDs are in a standard 2.5 inch form factor, and the OTM8S1S in an M.2 2280 form factor. The SSDs use 3D TLC NAND Flash technology which offers the best combination of cost and reliability.

Kingston eMMC embedded memory, as well as Kingston DRAM, are used in a demonstration design available from Future Electronics. The Goldilocks platform is a multi-sensor and hub system designed by Future Electronics Future Design Centers. It consists of a main hub board based on a system-on-module powered by the i.MX 8M Plus application processor from NXP Semiconductors, a wearable sensor node board, and an ultra-wideband (UWB) add-on card.
