Murata has expanded the CR series of primary 3 V manganese dioxide lithium coin cells to enable engineers to optimize the battery choice for the load, operating temperature, or bill-of-materials budget of their product design.
In addition to the conventional standard version of these thin, high-capacity coin cells, Murata now offers models with extended temperature ranges, and high drain models which extend the use of coin batteries to higher-current applications.
The high drain CR models are optimized to last longer while providing short bursts of high-current performance. This is a typical requirement of connected devices which transmit bursts of data over a low-power wide-area network (LPWAN). The maximum pulse discharge of the high drain model is 50 mA, double that of the standard model. This enables designers to use coin cells for applications such as LPWAN data transmission for the first time.
While the operating-temperature range of the standard Murata CR batteries is -30°C to 70°C, the extended temperature CR models can operate between -40°C and 85°C, and have a smaller voltage drop than the standard batteries, even when stored for 100 days or more at 85°C. A heat resistant model offers an even greater operating range of -40°C to 125°C. This makes these coin cells ideal for use in automotive applications, factory automation, and outdoor IoT applications, in which they offer a space-saving alternative to cylindrical lithium batteries.
Other micro batteries from Murata are the mercury-free 1.55 V silver oxide (SR) type, and the 1.5 V alkaline manganese LR series. Both have an operating-temperature range of -10°C to 60°C.
The SR batteries have large capacity and stable voltage, making them ideal for applications such as watches, medical equipment and precision instruments. The LR series offers designers an economical, safe power option. High drain models of the SR and LR batteries are also now available for applications with larger current loads, such as in drug delivery systems, communication, lighting, or machines.
