Infineon TLE9879QXW40 Embedded Power IC

Robust solution for high-temperature motor designs

Reference designs and full-featured development kits from Infineon provide a highly integrated solution for driving Brushless DC (BLDC) motors in high-temperature applications such as engine cooling fans and water pumps.


The solutions available from Infineon include a reference design for a three-phase automotive auxiliary water pump in the thermal management system, based on the TLE9879QXW40 Embedded Power IC. In the water pump circuit, the TLE9879QXW40 drives six 40V IAUC60N04S6N031H OptiMOS™ MOSFETs configured as three half-bridges.


The reference design also features Infineon’s 40V OptiMOS IPZ40N04S5-3R1 MOSFET, which provides active reverse-polarity protection. The design implements a sensorless Field-Oriented Control (FOC) scheme to drive loads up to 100W at an automotive battery voltage of 12V.


The TLE9879QXW40 is part of Infineon’s TLE987x family of three-phase bridge driver ICs. The TLE9879QXW40 motor driver system-on-chip integrates an Arm® Cortex®-M3 microcontroller core for running advanced motor-control algorithms.


It also includes:

• Six MOSFET drivers optimized for driving three external half-bridges

• A charge pump which enables low-voltage operation and programmable current and current-slope control. This produces excellent EMC characteristics.

• Current sensor

• Successive-approximation ADC synchronized with the capture-and-compare unit for PWM control and 16-bit timers

• LIN transceiver

• Ten general-purpose I/Os

• On-chip linear voltage regulator to supply external loads


The IAUC60N04S6N031H is a 40V MOSFET in a 5mm x 6mm SSO8 package, based on Infineon´s OptiMOS™ 6 technology. It enables the implementation of low-cost, low- and mid-power drive applications. Enhanced routing for use in half- and full-bridge applications gives designers the potential to reduce the system’s board footprint.


The IPZ40N04S5-3R1 is an OptiMOS™ 5 40V MOSFET in a 3.3mm x 3.3mm S3O8 leadless power package. Featuring low on-resistance of 2.8mΩ, the MOSFET is intended for use in automotive BLDC motor and H-bridge applications which have high energy-efficiency and power-density requirements.


The water pump reference design board has the orderable part number REFWATERPUMP100WTOBO1.

This BLDC Shield for Arduino uses a TLE9879QXA40 Embedded Power IC to drive BLDC motors in combination with an Arduino-compatible baseboard. Infineon supplies the shield with motor-control algorithms implementing sensorless FOC and Hall sensor-based block commutation. The shield is controlled from the baseboard via a serial peripheral interface.
