TVS diodes provide reliable protection against high power surges

May 15, 2025

The SMC50J series of transient voltage suppression (TVS) diodes from STMicroelectronics ensures compliance with industry standards. High stability and high-temperature operation make these diodes suitable for use in premium products.

The SMC50J series of TVS diodes from STMicroelectronics may be used to protect sensitive equipment against electrostatic discharges. These TVS diodes are compatible with the requirements of the IEC 61000-4-2, MIL STD 883 Method 3015 ESD standard. They also support compliance with standards governing tolerance of electrical overstress such as IEC 61000-4-4 and 5.

The SMC50J diodes protect against surges of up to 5,000 W with a 10/1,000 μs waveform, and up to 48 kW with a 8/20 μs waveform. The SMC50JxxA diodes offer unidirectional protection, and the SMC50JxxCA diodes are bidirectional.

The planar technology of the SMC50J series makes it compatible with high-end equipment, and with switch-mode power supplies. The diodes have low leakage current and high maximum junction temperature of 175°C to provide reliability and stability over time.

The SMC50J series diodes are backed by an online TVS Simulator which may be used to select the TVS diode which most closely matches application specifications.
