Replace cables in short-range connectivity with 60GHz transceiver

October 29, 2026

Short-range contactless links are enabled by the ST60A3H1C1CCEPY3 transceiver from STMicroelectronics, which removes the need for connectors in compact equipment while supporting high-speed data transfer.

Connectors and flex cables can limit enclosure design, reliability, sealing, and service access in equipment that needs fast data transfer. The ST60A3H1C1CCEPY3 transceiver operates in the 60GHz V-band, creating a short-range radio-frequency (RF) link for contactless point-to-point communication between two closely aligned systems.

The miniature antenna-in-package (AiP) construction integrates the RF transceiver and dual-linear-polarization antenna. This reduces external radio-frequency design work and supports compact layouts where a conventional connector would consume valuable space.

The ST60A3H1C1CCEPY3 works in half-duplex mode and can tunnel eUSB2, UART, GPIO or I2C traffic across the wireless link. This helps engineers replace physical interconnects without changing the higher-level system architecture.

For sealed products, the contactless link can support charging docks, service ports, accessory interfaces, or production-line test points without cutting holes in the enclosure. This is useful in wearables, industrial tools, personal equipment, and other products exposed to dust, moisture, or cleaning.

The ST60A3H1C1CCEPY3 can also support factory automation and after-sales service workflows. Engineers can use the link for contactless data harvesting or firmware over-the-air (FOTA) update points in products that do not expose a connector. Low-power operation supports short-range embedded links in battery-powered or energy-conscious systems.

60GHz V-band contactless connectivity transceiver expansion board kit

Part Number: X-NUCLEO-60K1A1

Based on the ST60A3H1 for the STM32 Nucleo development board, the X-NUCLEO-60K1A1 from STMicroelectronics contains two boards that work as a pair. The X-NUCLEO-60L1A1 expansion board hosts an ST60A3H1 configured as Local, while the X-NUCLEO-60R1A1 expansion board hosts an ST60A3H1 configured as Remote.

The Local board plugs into an STM32 Nucleo development board through Arduino UNO R3 connectors. The Remote board operates stand-alone, while configuration of the pair is handled from the Local side. Free development firmware, examples and the X-CUBE-ST60 software expansion package support development within STM32Cube.

Key features:

  • 60GHz V-band contactless connectivity evaluation
  • Contactless range: up to 3cm
  • eUSB2, UART, GPIO and I2C RF tunnelling
  • Embedded eUSB2 repeater
  • Bypassable USB2 hub on Remote board
  • Compatible with most STM32 Nucleo boards
