FTM / Connectivity / STMicroelectronics — STM32WL3RK8 32-bit MCU
Long-range wireless links in small battery-powered equipment need low current consumption, flexible radio support and enough processing headroom for the local application. The STM32WL3RK8V6 wireless microcontroller combines a 64MHz Arm® Cortex-M0+ core with a sub-GHz radio in a compact system-on-chip.
The radio operates in license-free industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) and short-range device (SRD) bands used worldwide. This helps designers address regional frequency plans for 315MHz, 433MHz, 868MHz and 915MHz/920MHz wireless equipment.
Multiple modulation schemes give the STM32WL3RK8V6 flexibility across proprietary and standardized protocols. A configurable packet handler and direct in-phase and quadrature (I/Q) data access help engineers adapt the radio to different protocol requirements. This matters in products where one hardware platform must support several regional or customer-specific wireless formats.
Autonomous radio operation helps reduce the amount of time the Arm Cortex-M0+ core has to remain active. The hardware sequencer supports functions such as sniff mode, frequency hopping, low-duty-cycle operation and listen-before-talk.
Power-saving modes further support long service life in coin-cell or battery-powered equipment. The integrated switched-mode power supply (SMPS) step-down converter and fast low-power state transitions help reduce average current consumption across active and standby periods.
Part Number: NUCLEO-WL33CC1
The NUCLEO-WL33CC1 board from STMicroelectronics is based on the MB1801 mezzanine board and the MB2029 high-band MCU RF board. It features the STM32WL33CCV6 metering-line application processor, rather than the STM32WL3RK8V6 remote-control line part.
The NUCLEO-WL33CC1 front end is optimized for 826MHz to 958MHz operation at 16dBm. It supports development for 868MHz, 915MHz, and 920MHz regional bands.
The board includes an SMA antenna, allowing engineers to evaluate radio performance without designing the antenna section first. This helps accelerate early proof-of-concept work for wireless sensors, metering equipment, and industrial monitoring nodes.
