Compact motion sensor enables triple-channel motion tracking with edge AI motion sensing in wearables

Issue 6 2026

The STMicroelectronics IMU combines motion sensing with embedded AI, enabling responsive tracking, gesture detection, and camera stabilization in compact consumer devices while reducing system power and processor load.

The LSM6DSV16X is a 6-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU), with a triple-channel architecture for user interface, optical image stabilization (OIS), and electronic image stabilization (EIS), data paths. This gives designers one compact sensor for responsive motion tracking in smartphones, wearables, handheld products, and immersive consumer systems.

A key strength is on-sensor intelligence. The LSM6DSV16X runs a finite state machine, machine learning core, adaptive self-configuration, and sensor fusion low-power processing inside the IMU, reducing host workload and supporting always-on behavior. QVAR sensing adds tap, swipe, and long-press style user inputs without requiring a separate interface sensor.

Integration is also strong. Dedicated OIS and EIS paths simplify camera stabilization designs, while an auxiliary SPI channel handles OIS data output and the analog hub supports external analog inputs. The sensor hub can acquire data from external sensors, helping developers build richer context-aware motion subsystems for navigation, gesture control, and connected products.

The LSM6DSV16X operates from 1.71V to 3.6V, with an independent I/O range from 1.08V to 3.6V, and works from -40°C to 85°C. For family migration, the LSM6DSV16BX targets hearables and bone-conduction use, while the LSM6DSV320X adds a separate high-g channel up to 320g for impact sensing.
