High power current sense resistors reduce hot spots in dense power stages

Susumu’s KRL series metal foil current sensing resistors combine high power per size, helping designers improve efficiency and thermal performance in compact converters and drives.

KRL series current sensing resistors are built around a metal foil resistive element and a face-down construction that is optimised for thermal and electrical stability. A highly heat-conductive adhesive between the foil and ceramic also acts as a mechanical stress buffer, improving solder-joint endurance through repeated temperature cycling.

 

Most current sensing resistors trade size against heat rise and long-term drift. KRL is positioned to push power density by managing where heat goes and by shortening the electrical path from the resistive element to the land pattern, which helps minimize temperature coefficient driven variation at high current.

 

KRL is offered in two main temperature characteristic options:

  • Code C, high operating temperature, operating temperature range: -55°C to 175°C
  • Code M, low electromotive force (EMF), operating temperature range: -55°C to 155°C

The series targets applications where low resistance and high current combine with limited board area. KRL options include long-side terminal, short-side terminal, and precision 4 terminal types.

 

Long-side terminal types target high power density and a wide size span, with rated power across the range from 0.5W to 10W and resistance values from 1mΩ to 500mΩ, depending on size and option. Short-side terminal types focus on compact footprints with strong current handling, spanning sizes 0510 to 50110 with power ratings from 0.2W to 5W and resistance values from 5mΩ to 1000mΩ, depending on size and option. Terminal choices include bottom terminal and wrap around terminal.
