Easy 8-bit to 32-bit migration for 5V designs with low-power microcontroller

October 1, 2026

Equipped with a range of peripherals for consumer, industrial, and transportation applications, the PIC32CM PL10 MCUs from Microchip provide Arm® Cortex®-M0+ performance on a 5V supply.

The PIC32CM PL10 series of MCUs combines a low-power 32-bit Arm Cortex-M0+ processor operating at up to 24MHz from a 1.8V to 5.5V supply range. Support for idle and standby sleep modes, SleepWalking peripherals, and hardware-based peripheral interaction through the Event System helps to minimize CPU activity and optimize power consumption, while providing a straightforward migration path from legacy 8-bit designs to a modern 32-bit architecture.

The microcontroller is packed with many peripherals suitable for use in applications spanning advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) to battery-powered wearables, including:

  • Peripheral touch controller with up to 29 self-capacitance touch channels
  • 2-channel direct memory access controller (DMAC)
  • 32-bit real-time counter with clock/calendar function
  • Configurable Custom Logic (CCL) and Event System peripherals

The PIC32CM PL10 series also includes advanced analog hardware such as a 12-bit, 800ksamples/s analog-to-digital converter, two analog comparators with window compare functionality, and internal or external voltage reference options. These make the MCU well suited for sensor interfacing, monitoring, and touch-enabled control applications.

Housed in 28-, 32-, 48-, and 64-pin package options, the microcontroller is AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualified and supports functional safety applications with ISO 26262 compliance up to ASIL B. Clock failure detection, watchdog timer functionality, and brown-out monitoring help to enhance system robustness and support fail-safe operation.

Up to 55 programmable I/O pins and up to 16 external interrupts enable engineers to interface the PIC32CM PL10 with multiple sensors and peripherals. Integrated multi-voltage I/O (MVIO) support enables direct interfacing to devices operating at different voltage levels, helping to reduce or eliminate the need for external level shifters while simplifying system design.
