Power Integrations' HiperPFS-5 family of power-factor-correction (PFC) ICs features a 750 V PowiGaN gallium nitride switch. With up to 98.3% efficiency, these ICs deliver up to 240 W without heatsinks and achieve a power factor of over 0.98. They give engineers a significant advantage in creating the fastest, smallest, and most versatile high-power USB PD chargers. They are also ideal for use in TVs, game consoles, all-in-one computers, and appliances.
In many countries, power supplies over 75 W require power factor correction. HiperPFS-5 ICs help designers meet strict efficiency regulations, reduce the bill of materials by half, and achieve highly compact form factors for ultra-fast chargers.

Capacitors and inductors in power supplies create a phase shift between current and voltage, causing power line losses and potentially disrupting other equipment connected to the AC mains. Many countries require power supplies over 75 W to compensate for this effect with power factor correction (PFC). While many PFC solutions are available, HiperPFS-5 ICs with PowiGaN technology represent the pinnacle of offline power quality enhancement.
HiperPFS-5’s innovative quasi-resonant (QR) discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) control technique ensures low switching losses and allows the use of a low-cost boost diode. These ICs maintain a high power factor up to 305 VAC and can operate continuously at up to 460 VAC during line swells. Additionally, they include Power Integrations' automatic X-capacitor discharge (CAPZero) function with the required redundant pins to meet safety regulations.
HiperPFS-5 ICs eliminate the need for bulky heatsinks in the PFC stage, allowing for exceptionally low-profile designs, which are especially useful for flatscreen TVs, industrial, and commercial applications. For larger TV screens or applications requiring higher output power, HiperPFS-5 devices support multiple PFC stages connected in parallel. A simple circuit can disable additional PFC stages when not needed, keeping no-load power consumption below 50 mW.
In regions with unstable mains power, HiperPFS-5 ICs maintain a high power factor up to 305 VAC and can continuously operate at up to 460 VAC during voltage surges, preventing over-voltage failures in power supply components.
