Smart Automation

Technology segments shaping the future

A new wave of digitalization is gathering speed in the latest trend, Industry 5.0. Also known as the Fifth Industrial Revolution, this is a new and emerging phase of industrialization in which humans work alongside advanced AI-powered robots.

This new phase builds on today’s Industry 4.0 systems, and is enabled by developments in AI, automation, big data analytics, the IoT, machine learning and robotics. The automation technology deployed in Industry 5.0 calls for a combination of ranging and proximity detection technology, intelligent vision, and motors driven by smart power systems.

onsemi provides reliable, intelligent and energy efficient technologies which accelerate the growth of fully autonomous manufacturing environments. These include high-speed intelligent sensing for robotics, scanning and inspection, and a wide portfolio of intelligent power products across all voltages and technologies, helping OEMs optimize their production flows, reduce risk, and lower operating costs.

A system solution from onsemi

The block diagram shows a solution for an autonomous mobile robot (AMR) created by onsemi: the functional blocks shown in orange are performed by onsemi products, including industrial image sensors, ultrasonic ranging sensors, and gate drivers and MOSFETs for motor drivers.

Use the menu below to see the parts related to each section on the diagram.

In the battery charger, products from onsemi enable a highly efficient PFC implementation using a totem pole topology, which replaces diodes with active switches to reduce power losses. The low-power NCP1680 or high-power NCP1681 PFC controllers provide an integrated implementation of the bridgeless totem pole topology.

A soft-switching LLC converter implemented with the NCP4390 offline power controller also reduces switching losses for high efficiency.

Buck converters such as the FAN6500x series, LDOs and eFuse products such as the NIS3071 support safe and effective battery management.

Image sensors for machine vision can be used in 2D or stereoscopic 3D configurations. The AR0234CS offers superior low-light and infrared sensitivity, while the AR0822 includes high dynamic range (HDR) capability for applications with uncontrolled lighting.

Design Blueprint: 3.5kW LLC DC-DC Converter Demonstration Design Board

Board part number: SoniC from Future Electronics

SoniC Board

Future Electronics supplies a demonstration design for a 3.5kW DC-DC converter which shows how SiC MOSFETs offer faster switching characteristics than silicon MOSFETs, superior robustness and excellent avalanche capability in the LLC topology. It is an excellent reference for designers developing an AMR’s battery charger or other elements of a smart automation system.

The SoniC power system development board is based on the NCP4390 LLC controller and NTH4L045N065SC1650-V SiC MOSFETs, as well as various other onsemi products for gate driving, switching, and power control. The board features a modular plug-in card which enables the designer to evaluate the performance of onsemi SiC MOSFETs with various on-resistance values.
