STMicroelectronics BlueNRG-M2 Bluetooth® 5.0 Module

Certified module provides application-ready solution for short-range wireless networking

For OEMs which want to accelerate product development without diverting scarce design resources to the creation of a complex radio frequency circuit, STMicroelectronics supplies a fully certified module – the BlueNRG-M2SA – which provides a complete, application-ready solution for Bluetooth® Low Energy (LE) networking.

The BlueNRG-M2SA module combines the BlueNRG-2, ST’s second-generation Bluetooth LE System-on-Chip (SoC), with an efficient ceramic antenna, RF balun circuit, 32kHz crystal oscillator, and inductor. It is housed in a compact 13.5mm x 11.5mm package.

Using this module greatly reduces development costs and enables designers who have little RF engineering expertise to create wireless devices. The BlueNRG-M2SA is qualified as a Bluetooth End Product, which relieves customers of the need to validate their end product. The module is also pre-certified for compliance with important radio equipment regulations:

  • FCC for operation in the US
  • IC (Canada)
  • RED (Europe)
  • TYPE (Japan)

The module’s BlueNRG-2 SoC contains an Arm® Cortex®-M0 core operating at up to 32MHz to handle the Bluetooth stack and application processing, backed by 24kbytes of RAM and 256kbytes of Flash program memory. It draws just 0.9µA in sleep mode with an active Bluetooth stack and full RAM retention.

Developers can experiment with the operation of the BlueNRG-M2SA module in fitness monitoring and wearable health applications by using the STEVAL-IDB008V1M plug-and-play development kit. The board combines the BlueNRG-M2SA module with an array of sensors which includes:

  • MEMS pressure and temperature sensor
  • Motion sensors for integration via a six-axis sensor fusion library

The STEVAL-IDB008V1M kit also features a low-latency, low-power adaptive differential pulse-code modulation codec for use with BlueVoice middleware for voice-over-Bluetooth LE streaming.

The kit’s Arduino R3 connectors give access to all the module’s peripherals, and enable users to extend system functionality by adding expansion shields.

The kit is backed by a development software package, STSW-BLUENRG1-DK, which contains an intuitive BlueNRG-Navigator GUI. The kit also simplifies integration of the BlueNRG-M2SA module with ST’s STSW-BNRG-MESH software for mesh networking. STSW-BNRG-MESH implements the Bluetooth SIG Mesh Profile v1.0 to allow true two-way communication and range-extending mesh networks.
