What is a RS-232?

In telecommunications, RS-232 is the name of the standard for serial binary single-ended data and control signals between a DTE (Data Terminal Equipment) and a DCE (Data Circuit-terminating Equipment). RS 232 is commonly used in a computer’s serial port. The RS232 standard defines the electrical characteristics as well as the timing of signals, their meaning and the physical size and pin out of the connectors. An RS-232 port can be found in PCs for connections to peripheral devices. However, due to their limited transmission speed and large connector sizes, the USB was developed.
