Infineon Energy Storage System Solutions
An increasingly essential role in electricity networks
The intermittent nature of renewable energy generation means that Energy Storage Systems (ESS) will play an increasingly essential role in our electricity networks. Battery-based ESS technology can respond to power drop-outs in under a second, making use of clean energy sourced from co-located solar or wind plants.
Energy Storage Systems are structured in two main parts:
- Power Conversion System (PCS) – always bi-directional, the PCS handles AC/DC and DC/AC conversion, with energy flowing into the batteries to charge them or being converted from the battery storage into AC power and fed into the grid. The Power Conversion System can be realized as a single instance approach with high power (Central PCS) or by using a modular lower power approach (String PCS).
- Battery Management System (BMS) – a 3-layer architecture composed of battery management unit (BMU), battery cluster management unit (BCMU) and battery array management unit (BAMU). The main functions fulfilled by the BMS are battery monitoring, protection and performance optimization. In the case of multi-cell batteries, the BMS also provides cell balancing to ensure consistent charge/discharge requirements across individual battery cells.
Infineon’s discrete CoolSiC™, OptiMOS™, and CoolMOS™ MOSFETs, along with highly integrated SiC and IGBT power modules, EiceDRIVER™ gate driver ICs, XENSIV™ current and pressure sensors, memory solutions, XMC™ industrial microcontrollers, AIROC™ wireless connectivity, and OPTIGA™ security controllers, are ideal for a wide range of energy storage system designs.
