E-Mobility

Meeting the transport needs of the urban consumer

Urban e-mobility is transforming city living, offering sustainable and efficient alternatives to traditional modes of transport. E-mobility encompasses a range of electric-powered vehicles including e-bikes and e-scooters which eliminate tailpipe emissions, alleviate traffic congestion and shorten travel time.

The rise of urban e-mobility is supported by advances in battery technology, infrastructure development, and growing environmental awareness. Cities around the world are investing in dedicated lanes, charging stations, and shared mobility programs to encourage the use of e-bikes and light electric vehicles (LEVs). Embracing e-mobility not only addresses current transportation challenges, but also paves the way for a greener future.

Typical system architecture

The architecture of a typical urban electric micromobility solution includes a wide range of functions performed by onsemi products (shown in the orange boxes). At its heart is the traction system, which is comprised of an inverter, gate drivers and sensors supporting a three-phase brushless DC (BLDC) motor.

onsemi battery protection devices are important for safety. onsemi also offers other important components for low-voltage power conversion using both LDOs and buck converters.

Recommended products, design notes and system solutions can be found in the onsemi System Solution Guide to e-bikes and e-scooters.

onsemi offers unique value in SiC technology with its breadth and depth of high-efficiency intelligent power solutions. Backed by years of manufacturing expertise, a vertical supply chain benefiting from substantial capital investment, and expanded R&D efforts, onsemi is a market leader in SiC.

SiC solutions from onsemi for vehicle electrification give customers the flexibility to choose discrete or module solutions based on their system requirements. Product offerings include SiC diodes, SiC MOSFETs, SiC modules, and hybrid silicon/SiC modules, supported by a complete ecosystem of design tools. These include SiC MOSFET SPICE Models and SiC Diode SPICE Models.

Evaluate e-mobility technology from onsemi

You can evaluate the latest onsemi technology with full-featured development boards available free to qualified customers of Future Electronics. The boards support the evaluation of SiC MOSFET modules, and gate drivers for motor drive circuits.

Evaluation Board for 1200V EliteSiC Module

Board part number: EVBUM2883G-EVB

This evaluation board provides a ready-made hardware system for testing the operation of onsemi 1200V, T-type neutral point clamped (TNPC) silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET modules.

The evaluation board supports double-pulse switching testing and open-loop power testing of the onsemi TNPC modules. The evaluation board can be connected to an external controller which provides PWM inputs and handles fault signals.

Supported Modules:

  • NXH008T120M3F2PTHG TNPC module
  • NXH011T120M3F2PTHG full-bridge module

The modules are based on 1200V M3S planar SiC MOSFETs which are optimized for fast switching. Planar technology works reliably with a negative gate drive voltage and turn-off spikes on the gate. The MOSFETs provide optimum performance when driven with a 20V gate-drive voltage, but also work well at 18V.
