Features & Applications
The recently introduced NCL30000 is a switch mode power supply controller for implementing single stage power factor corrected (PFC) AC-DC LED drivers. The device achieves high power factor in a single stage topology by using a critical conduction mode (CrM) flyback topology.
The NCL30000’s constant on-time CrM operation is particularly well suited for isolated flyback LED applications as the control scheme is straightforward, offers very high efficiency and can be realized even at low power levels. These characteristics enable compliance with regulatory agency requirements and assist in meeting overall system luminous efficacy requirements. Switching losses in this device are low as recovery losses in the output rectifier are negligible due to a zero current prior to reactivating the main MOSFET switch. The NCL30000 features a programmable on-time limiter, zero current detect sense block, gate driver, and trans-conductance error amplifier as well as all PWM control circuitry and protection functions required to implement a CrM switch mode power supply. Moreover, for high efficiency, the device’s low startup current enables fast, low loss charging of the VCC capacitor. The current sense protection threshold is set at 500mV to minimize power dissipation in the external sense resistor. To support the environmental operation range of solid state lighting, the device is specified across a wide junction temperature range of −40ºC to +125ºC.
The NCL30000 is compatible with IEC61000-3-2 Class C for harmonic content and exceeds Energystar Luminaire and emerging integral LED bulb standard.
